Medal Design Tips & Best Practices
Keep Text Legible
Minimum text height: 1.5mm for engraving, 2mm for enamel. Sans-serif fonts work best at small sizes. Avoid thin scripts.
Design for the Material
Zinc alloy die-casting allows 3D relief and openwork. Stamping is better for simple flat designs. Your material choice affects what's possible.
Mind the Color Count
1-3 enamel colors is standard and most cost-effective. 4-6 colors is fine with a small surcharge. 7+ colors increases cost. Black counts as one color.
Leave Space for the Ribbon
Include a clearly marked attachment point (usually at the top). Standard ribbon slot: 20-30mm wide. Consider how the medal hangs.
Think About Thickness
Zinc alloy minimum: 2mm. Standard medals: 2.5-4mm. Giant medals (5"+): 4-6mm. Thicker = heavier and more premium feel.
Plan for Plating
Gold and silver plating hide minor surface imperfections. Matte finishes are more forgiving than mirror finishes. Antique finishes add depth and character.
Contrast Is Key
Light metal + dark enamel = highest contrast. Dark metal + light enamel = elegant. Similar tones = subtle. Gold plating + red/blue/black enamel is the classic combination.
Consider the Back
The medal back is free real estate. Add your event name, date, sponsor logos, or a motivational message. Laser engraving is perfect for event-specific details.
File Formats
Vector files are best: .AI, .CDR, .EPS, .PDF. Raster files are OK: .PSD, .PNG (≥300dpi). A simple sketch or reference photo works to get started.
